Do not waste your time. I assume the collection is supposed to be some kind of "food for thought," but misses the target by ten miles. All the short stories are nothing more than half cooked ideas, going nowhere. Some of them start out great, and right when the plot peeks up speed and becomes interesting, it just ends, or goes down the hill to a lame finish. Other stories are a loosing proposition from the beginning... I read them all in the hope I will get just one good read. Please do not make the same mistake!
I found the first two stories in this collection to be interesting and entertaining. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about the other stories. They all focused too much on future conflicts with malevolent aliens and too little on the exploration and science related to the discovery of a wormhole. I would have preferred more investigation of the wonders associated with the revelation that wormholes do exist and less far in the future combat between civilizations.
I grew up with Asimov Heinlein, Clarke and others of the same level. This anthology has some that approach that skill and some that don't. It might be me and it might be the times. But it's not sifis hayday.
Interesting stories, easy reading for sci-fi, with lots of different takes on wormholes and their impact on the various characters. At the end of every story, there is an interesting series of questions asked of each author. The best is, "If given a choice, would you go through a wormhole?". Interestingly enough, not all the authors would go. Would I? You betcha!
This may have been the toughest selection to struggle through. I expected to find at least some of the stories interesting enough to rate another look. Not to be! A complete waste of time. Sorry but that's the way I saw it.
I love this approach to the short story! This gives you the flavor of some great authors that I hadn't heard of before. It makes me want to go and find what else they've written. No story is too long or too short. A great way to get your mind thinking about the possibilities... and dangers... of wormholes!
I tried a couple of these stories but never managed to finish any of them. It's true I'm not a big short story fan but I thought maybe the common link (the "wormhole universe"would provide some continuity and make it more interesting. Instead it seemed like the stories were not completely thought out and couldn't hold my interest.
If you're looking for a cohesive novel this is not the book for you. As you may have guessed from the multiple authors is a collection of multiple short stories all with a common central theme. What keeps this book fascinating is the strikingly diverse ways the authors interpret that central element. Well worth the read.
